Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January, recognizing the life, achievements, service, and inspiration of Martin Luther King Jr., a guiding American civil rights leader.

Today, let’s consider one of King’s lesser-known quotes…

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death.”

King spoke these famous words on healthcare while speaking to the press before attending the annual meeting of the Medical Committee for Human Rights. This committee was formed because the American Medical Association was segregated at the time.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 isn’t usually linked to healthcare. However, during this moment in history, it was well known that some hospitals and medical institutions were resisting the push for desegregation, a practice which hospitals used to produce less than adequate care to African American patients. Hospitals would carry on these prejudicial practices unless something was done.

At Hruby Chiropractic Wellness, we are grateful for Dr. King’s civil rights advocacy, particularly for his goal towards providing health equity to all.
