Throughout June, Men’s Health Month focuses on improving the lifestyles of men. While there are several inroads to improving overall health, diet and exercise are the keys to health improvements. There are also small steps to take in the more extensive road of improving your or a loved one’s health:

  • Know your preventable risks
  • Take steps to begin healthful habits
  • Schedule regular screenings for early detection of disease including:
    • Blood pressure screening
    • Cardiovascular screening
    • Colorectal cancer exams
    • Prostate cancer exams
    • Skin cancer exams
    • Testicular cancer exams
  • Learn your risk factors
  • Document your family history with your health provider

Create Healthy Lifestyle Choices

  • Get enough sleep, exercise on a regular basis, and eat balanced meals, helping to control your mental and physical health.
  • If you’re depressed, seek counseling. Oftentimes, depressed men may appear to be angry or aggressive instead of sad, making it more difficult to notice symptoms.

Minimize Risky Behavior

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading causes of death among men are heart disease, cancer, and accidental death.

  • If you smoke, ask your health care provider to help you quit. Smoking can lead to conditions like heart disease and cancer.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. Too much drinking can contribute to poor health.

Have a conversation with the men in your life about making an appointment for a checkup. It’s essential to encourage men to get regular checkups and be aware of the risks for their age, ethnicity, and lifestyle.
