Some factors that increase your risk:

  • Weight. Being overweight is considered the main risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
  • Inactivity. The less you move, the greater your risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Family history. The risk of type 2 diabetes goes up if your parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes.
  • Age. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases as you age, especially if you’re older than 45.
  • Prediabetes. Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar level is higher than normal, yet not high enough to be labeled as diabetes. However, if this condition is left untreated, prediabetes often develops into type 2 diabetes.

Here are proactive ways to avoid diabetes.

  • Exercise. Find a physical activity which will help lower weight, blood glucose levels, and lower body fat. Consider walking around the block at a lunch break or taking the stairs instead of elevator.
  • Get an annual physical. By having regular checkups, you know where you stand and what changes you may need to ask. Use this time to ask questions.
  • Make small victories. With small changes, you are more likely to stick to your goals. When we make small changes, we are more likely to stick when them.
  • If you snack it, track it. By keeping track of our goals, we are more likely to be honest if we write down our daily intake than if we just guess.
  • Work with a friend. Creating and completing goals is more enjoyable with a friend and more fun than going it alone.
